Automatic Internet Failover With Starlink

Understand dual-WAN routing, health checks, recovery behavior, power backup, and testing for automatic Starlink failover.

How automatic failover works

Automatic failover allows a compatible router to move traffic to Starlink when the primary connection fails, then return when service is stable. It reduces response time but still requires deliberate configuration and testing.

A dual-WAN router monitors the primary connection and routes new traffic through Starlink after a failure threshold is reached. The Starlink router may operate normally or in bypass mode depending on the design. Configuration should avoid double routing problems while preserving access for management and diagnostics.

Health checks must detect real internet failure

Evaluate router capabilities, WAN interfaces, health-check targets, failover delay, session interruption, VPN behavior, DNS, bandwidth limits, inbound services, power backup, and whether both links fail for the same physical reason.

A plugged-in Ethernet cable can remain electrically active even when the provider beyond it is down. Reliable health checks test multiple external targets and require several failures before switching. Settings that are too sensitive cause unnecessary changes; settings that are too slow leave the business offline longer than expected.

What happens to active sessions

Configure reliable health checks rather than relying only on a connected cable, prioritize essential traffic, allow enough recovery time to avoid rapid switching, and monitor both connections even while one is idle.

Existing calls, VPN tunnels, payment sessions, and downloads may reset because the public internet address changes between providers. Applications should reconnect gracefully, but failover is not always invisible. Test the exact software used by the business instead of assuming that a successful web page proves every service survived.

Failback and traffic priorities

Avoid untested default settings, overly aggressive checks, or assuming existing calls and payment sessions will always survive a WAN change. Starlink addressing can affect services that expect inbound connections or a fixed public IP.

When primary service returns, the router should wait for stability before moving traffic back to prevent repeated switching. Quality-of-service rules can reserve backup capacity for phones, transactions, and administration. Guest networks and large updates may be paused automatically while Starlink carries emergency traffic.

Monitoring and scheduled testing

Run scheduled failure tests by safely disconnecting one service and confirming applications, alerts, and restoration behavior. Record the results and adjust routing with qualified network support when operations are critical.

Monitor both WANs even when one is idle and alert on extended failure. Conduct quarterly tests, document expected switch times, and train staff on manual override. Network professionals should configure complex VPN, public-address, firewall, or multi-site requirements.
