Starlink as Backup Internet for a Business
Plan Starlink as a secondary connection for payment systems, communications, cloud tools, cameras, and essential operations.
Define what must keep working
List essential activities: payments, phones, orders, remote access and staff communications. Decide how long each can tolerate an interruption. A backup internet connection is useful only if the equipment and applications using it can keep running.
Map shared failure points
Primary connection and Starlink backup → dual-WAN router → switches/access points → essential devices. Check the power supply to every part. Two internet services on the same unprotected power strip still share a power failure.
Record the router, Starlink power equipment, switches, wireless access points and any phone equipment that need battery support. Measure their combined load and use the UPS runtime curve at that load.
Assign a response
| Responsibility | What to record |
|---|---|
| Detection | Who sees alerts and how they are reached |
| Network recovery | Who can check WAN status and restart equipment |
| Business fallback | Payment or phone procedure if both links fail |
| Supplier contact | Account details and escalation route |
Keep the essential instructions accessible without the failed internet connection.
Test a real interruption
At a planned quiet time, disconnect the primary WAN and verify that Starlink takes over. Try an actual essential application, not just a speed test. Record detection time, whether sessions drop and whether staff must sign in again.
Reconnect the primary service and observe recovery. Separately test the intended power-backup scenario without disrupting safety-critical equipment. Repeat after major network changes. A larger Starlink terminal is not a substitute for this test or for addressing shared power and router failures.
