Starlink for Working From Home: Calls, VPNs, and Reliable Office Wi-Fi
Build a dependable home-office connection by addressing obstructions, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, video calls, VPN behavior, power, and backup options.
Remote work depends on consistency
Large download results look impressive, but meetings, remote desktops, VPNs, and cloud tools are sensitive to brief outages, upload limits, latency spikes, and weak Wi-Fi. Evaluate the connection by the work it must perform during normal business hours, not by one best-case speed test.
Start with a clear terminal location
Obstructions can create short interruptions that a streaming buffer hides but a live call cannot. Review the app's obstruction map and outage history, account for seasonal foliage, and correct a poor physical location before purchasing more indoor network equipment.
Give the office a strong local connection
Place the router centrally when practical, or use wired Ethernet to a workstation or properly located access point. A desk in a basement corner, metal-sided addition, or distant room may need a planned network extension. Test device-to-router performance separately from router-to-internet performance.
Understand VPN and employer requirements
Most ordinary outbound VPN clients can operate over Starlink, but employer security tools, remote-access systems, static-IP requirements, and latency-sensitive applications vary. Test the actual corporate VPN, voice application, file transfer, and authentication process before relying on the setup for a critical day.
Prepare for power and service interruptions
Use a suitable UPS for short outages when continuous work matters, protect equipment from surges, and keep a charged cellular hotspot or other backup where coverage permits. A UPS keeps local equipment powered; it cannot correct a network outage or an obstructed dish.
Create a repeatable work test
During expected working hours, join a test call, upload a file, use the VPN, and monitor stability from the actual desk. Record recurring times and app events. This provides better troubleshooting evidence than repeatedly moving the router or resetting the system.
