
Choosing the Best Location for Your Starlink Dish
Learn how sky visibility, trees, rooflines, cable length, safe access, and appearance influence professional dish placement.
Compare locations before buying a mount
Choose two or three possible positions. At each safely accessible location, use the official Starlink app's obstruction check at approximately the proposed dish height. Scan the full area requested by the app. A photograph of one clear patch does not represent the complete required sky view.
Record the obstruction result, likely seasonal tree growth, mount attachment, maintenance access and complete cable route. Do not climb onto a roof to collect a phone scan without appropriate access and expertise.
The bracket places the dish above the roof edge while the cable follows the outside of the house. Check the attachment and sky view for the actual property.

These are illustrative observations, not measurements for your property. Include rises, drops, wall thickness, bends and service slack in the route. A straight-line distance alone can select the wrong cable.
Valleys, trees and alignment
A valley is not automatically unusable. What matters is how much of the required sky the ridge or trees block from the dish position. Raising the dish a little may clear a nearby eave but may do very little for a distant tall canopy.
Use the official app's alignment target for your terminal after placement. StarTether's North baseline is a preview starting point, not a universal instruction to point a working Starlink dish north. Never force a motorized terminal to rotate.
After relocating an existing dish
Inspect reused cables and attachments, repair abandoned penetrations appropriately, and repeat the alignment and obstruction checks. Compare interruption history and an actual call or work session before declaring the move successful. A better speed result alone does not prove that repeated obstruction dropouts have gone away.
