Starlink Installation for Renters and Landlord-Owned Properties

Plan written permission, reversible mounting, cable entry, equipment ownership, service responsibility, and removal before installing at a rental.

Get written property permission first

A tenant's Starlink account does not authorize roof, wall, fascia, siding, or interior penetrations. Provide the landlord or property manager with the proposed mount, location, cable route, entry point, and removal plan. Written approval should identify any prohibited surfaces or restoration requirements.

Separate equipment ownership from property improvements

Record who owns the terminal, router, cable, mount, conduit, Ethernet wiring, and labor. Some components may leave with the tenant while permanently attached pathways remain with the building. Clear records reduce disputes at move-out.

Compare reversible options honestly

Portable stands, weighted mounts, existing approved masts, and certain ground solutions may reduce building penetrations, but they still require sky visibility, wind security, cable protection, and permission to occupy outdoor space. Running a cable through a window is not a safe permanent solution.

Plan a compliant cable entry

Avoid pinched doors, windows, shared hallways, trip hazards, and unauthorized drilling. In multi-unit buildings, common roofs, exterior walls, fire-rated assemblies, and utility spaces may require additional approval or professional coordination.

Decide who controls service and support

The account holder should maintain private login and billing information. Landlords offering internet to tenants or guests should define acceptable use, password changes, equipment access, outage reporting, and whether service remains after occupancy changes.

Prepare the removal and restoration plan

Before move-out, schedule safe disconnection, protect equipment, and repair approved penetrations using methods suitable for the roof or wall. Do not leave a cable hanging, abandon holes, or remove a mount in a way that damages the building. Document the completed restoration with photographs.
