Protecting Starlink Cable During Excavation and Landscaping

Locate and protect underground pathways before grading, fencing, drainage, tree work, utility repair, or landscape installation begins.

Private communications routes may not appear in utility marking

A ground-pole Starlink cable or private building link can cross a yard outside public utility records. Before digging, use the required utility-location process and separately identify owner-installed communications pathways. Do not assume a public locate marks every private cable.

Gather route records

Find installation photographs, measurements, conduit endpoints, pull boxes, warning tape, and changes made since installation. Walk the route with the contractor and mark a tolerance zone rather than drawing one narrow guessed line. If records are missing, use an appropriate private-locate method before excavation.

De-energize and expose cautiously

Plan whether service must remain online, disconnect equipment when work could contact the route, and use careful hand exposure near the expected pathway. A cable may carry power to the terminal; treat it as active equipment, not an abandoned television line.

Protect conduit during the project

Heavy machinery, stakes, fence posts, drainage trenches, roots, and grade changes can crush or pull conduit. Support exposed sections, cap openings, preserve drainage, maintain bend radius, and prevent soil or concrete from entering. Do not suspend a long exposed span by the cable inside it.

Respond correctly to damage

Stop work, disconnect power, photograph the damage, and inspect the complete affected route. Do not twist wires together, bury an improvised splice, or cover a crushed conduit. Replacement of the factory cable or a properly designed network segment is more dependable.

Update records after landscaping

Photograph the repaired or relocated route before backfill, measure from permanent landmarks, label endpoints, and save the information with property records. Future owners and contractors should be able to find the pathway without repeating the risk.
